Occupational Therapy
At Helix, our number one priority is our children’s regulation. We know from research that in order to learn most effectively, children must feel safe, connected, and regulated. Our occupational therapists assess the student’s sensory needs to develop individualized sensory strategies and programs for support within and outside the classroom. Our OT gym is full of tools that we encourage our students to utilize throughout the day including suspended swings, crash pads, scooter boards, tunnels, and more. Besides regulation, in occupational therapy sessions, we work on fine and gross motor skills, visuoperceptual skills, executive functioning, self help, and independent work skills. We always build our students' interests into their therapeutic interventions to support engagement. We offer support to teaching staff to effectively integrate multisensory tools and accommodations within the classroom environment, such as, alternative seating options, natural light, and aromatherapy. We work collaboratively to incorporate much needed movement breaks throughout the day and develop individualized sensory diets as needed. We have weekly opportunities to collaborate with teachers and the rest of the team as well as monthly meetings with parents and caregivers.
